Sunset Over The Grand Prismatic Hot Spring, Yellowstone National Park, WY
Yellowstone smells like farts (it’s true), but is otherwise quite a special place. If you go, be prepared for an awesome experience unlike any other. The boiling effluence from deep unground is so otherworldly and primeval. You're standing on the shore of the underworld! It is pretty rad. And pretty pretty. And rather steamy. So hot.
I realized when was there that everybody photographs Grand Prismatic in the daytime, from above, so those unbelievable colors are on display. As cool as that is, I decided to take a different tact. I waited around for sunset, fingers crossed, and ultimately was rewarded with a beauty. I lined the steamy spring up with the colorful sky, and used the reflections to illustrate the other-wordly textures of mineral rings. I think in a subtle way, the sunset reflection is even nicer than the rainbow colors of day.
