Sunset At Thor's Well, Coast of Oregon
The intertidal zone along the Oregon Coast is a wonder of earth & waves. The rough hewn cliffs, slides, massive trees and enormous waves never cease to amaze me. Imagine a cave of black obsidian just under the surface, its chasm tunneled over millennia by crashing surf. It funnels large swells into a dark subterranean chamber that booms like a primordial drum. At high tide these waves burst up & out of the chamber, like a spouting geyser on the shore. The frothy water spreads out in all directions, around clusters of rocks & into mirror smooth pools of standing water. The swell recedes, sucking the frothy water back down thru the opening. The standing pools drain into the growing void as dozens of little waterfalls ring the chasm, and the churning froth plummets to the hidden chamber. Another swell crashes against the dark, volcanic escarpment, funnels into the deep sea cave & forces another eruption to the surface; this one less chaotic, softer, and it spreads only a short ways from the well. Every wave strike is different. Every booming explosion set to a beating rhythm known only to the gods.
