Thunderstorm at Sunset on the Great Plains, Eastern MT
Chasing a storm on the Great Plains has been a dream of mine for a long time. While traveling thru Montana a few weeks ago, I finally got my chance! I could see the system from many miles out. As I pressed onwards I gradually caught up to the storm. Suddenly large droplets pelted my windshield and everything but the closest features of the road disappeared. Then just as suddenly I burst out of the rain on the other side of the system. The clouds grew darker and changed shape as they rolled across the land, on their own natural trajectory that crossed the highway and moved south over the open fields. I was committed to the pavement's course and could not follow. But then the road swept south a bit and I was on top of the storm again. The last light of day was near, and the clouds were beginning to warm. Everything was becoming more and more beautiful. I hoped I would be in time and get some shots before the conditions faded or the storm got away from me. I took a chance and turned south onto a small two track gravel road and ventured out into the fields. The air smelled wonderful, warm and sweet. The churning storm was moving further and further from me, but the last light of day was upon the land and everything came together.I stopped my van, and walked into a field, and set up my tripod and camera. Using the slowest shutter speed I could, I aimed right for the storm and took shot after shot hoping lightning would go off in sync with the 1" exposure. I must have taken over a hundred consecutive shots when finally lightning burst forth in just the right spot and I had it! I had captured a moment that I'd dreamed of witnessing for years!
