Foggy Morning Walk Thru the Coastal Range, Tillamook County, OR
Some natural beauty exists in predictable places at predictable times. But just as often it happens when I least expect it. I was camped in Suislaw National Forest atop a 1700 ft coastal mountain. Logging operations had created a network of reliable gravel access roads. The wild camping site I found had a panoramic view of the valleys and the ocean in the distance. It was from there I expected to see something awe inspiring. But as I walked my dog in the forest, a cloud inversion off the pacific ocean (The Marine Layer) swept thru the trees. The harsh, specular light was immediately changed to a soft, diffuse light, the kind that cameras like. And what more, the tree branches and angle of the sun created these mesmerizing light rays thru the cloud. I dashed back to retrieve my camera and tripod, then returned to the spot in the forest where I had been. I lucked out and the dense cloud did not move off before I could get the shot.
