Sunset in the Dunes, Morro Bay, California
I wish it were possible to indicate how amazing it feels to see the ocean after months of camping in the desert. The warm, refreshing salt air, the sound of the crashing waves, the spray alighting on my arms and face, the birds calling, and the intrepid surfers in their wetsuits… It was the ultimate relief for this nomad.
Morro Bay is perhaps most famous for Morro Rock, a large volcanic plug hundreds of feet high, surrounded on 3 sides by the pacific ocean.
I had seen its profile in countless photos and my aspirations for this evening included a composition that placed the sunset squarely behind the towering “rock”. Only problem was that’s not where the sunset colors were that night. They were off to the right. Inspired by the dunes and sea grasses, I recomposed my shot to focus primarily on the setting sun and the foreground. With this angle only Half of Morro Rock is visible, and so this iconic formation might be less recognizable. Oh well.
